Ruwanweli Maha Seya

Image
The Ruwanweli Maha Seya, also known as the Great Stupa, stands as a magnificent symbol of Sri Lanka's rich Buddhist heritage and architectural brilliance. Located in the sacred city of Anuradhapura, it was built by the heroic King Dutugemunu in the 2nd century BCE after his unification of the island. Standing at approximately 338 feet, it is one of the world's tallest ancient monuments. The stupa is renowned for its unique "bubble" shape and is surrounded by a large paved court and a wall adorned with hundreds of elephant figures, symbolizing strength and protection. At the very top, the golden pinnacle  shines brightly, reflecting the spiritual significance of the site. The Ruwanweli Seya is more than just a monument; it is a sacred reliquary. It is believed to house a large portion of the Buddha's physical relics, making it one of the sixteen places of veneration in Sri Lanka. Every year, thousands of devotees dressed in white visit the stupa to offer flowers,...

Sigiriya, also known as the Lion Rock, is one of Sri Lanka's most iconic landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Located in the Matale District, this ancient rock fortress was built by King Kashyapa during the 5th century AD. It served as both a royal palace and a military stronghold, rising nearly 200 meters above the surrounding plains. The site is world-renowned for its remarkable architectural and engineering ingenuity. At the base of the rock lie the beautifully landscaped Royal Gardens, which feature advanced hydraulic systems, including fountains that still work today during the rainy season. As you climb the rock, you encounter the famous Sigiriya Frescoes-exquisite paintings of celestial maidens that have preserved their vibrant colors for centuries. My Most Memorable Birthday Gift

Image
Birthdays are always special, filled with love, laughter, and surprises. Over the years, I have received many wonderful presents, but the most memorable gift I ever received was a professional fashion sketchbook and a high-quality set of design markers given to me by my parents on my last birthday. This gift is incredibly special to me because it shows how much my family supports my dream of becoming a fashion designer. Before I received this, I used to draw my designs on random pieces of paper. Now, having a dedicated space to organize my ideas has made me feel like a real artist. The sketchbook has thick, high-quality pages that bring my colorful imagination to life. I remember the moment I unwrapped it; I felt a rush of excitement and gratitude. It wasn't just a physical object; it was a symbol of encouragement. Every time I pick up those markers to shade a fabric pattern or sketch a new silhouette, I feel motivated to work harder toward my goals. This gift taught me that the ...

My Future Ambition

Image
Everyone has a dream that gives their life a sense of direction, and mine is to become a successful Fashion Designer. From a young age, I have been fascinated by how colors, fabrics, and patterns come together to express a person's identity and emotions. To me, fashion is not just about clothes; it is a form of wearable art. My goal is to create unique designs that blend modern trends with cultural heritage. I spend much of my free time sketching outfits and experimenting with different textures. I believe that fashion has the power to boost a person's confidence. By becoming a designer, I want to help people feel comfortable and beautiful in what they wear, regardless of their shape or size. To achieve this dream, I plan to study fashion design at a reputed institute to master the technical aspects like pattern making, garment construction, and textile science. I am particularly interested in sustainable fashion, as l want to create beautiful clothing that does not harm our ...

My Dearest Sister

Image
Siblings are our first friends and lifelong guides, and in my life, that role is played beautifully by my elder sister, Upeksha Nayanamali. At 26 years old, she is not just a sibling to me, but a mentor and a source of constant inspiration. She has a personality that perfectly matches her name; she is calm, patient, and possesses a very kind heart. Being a few years older than me, she has always been protective and supportive. Whether I am struggling with my studies or facing a personal challenge, she is the first person 1 turn to. Her advice is always practical and filled with wisdom beyond her  years. One of the things I admire most about her is her determination. At 26, she is focused on her career and personal growth, yet she never fails to make time for the family. She manages her responsibilities with grace and a smile that can brighten up anyone's day. We share many happy memories together, from simple daily chats to celebrating big milestones. In conclusion, She is a...

Free Education: A Gateway to Success

Image
Free education is one of the most valuable assets of a nation. In countries like Sri Lanka, it provides every child with the opportunity to learn, regardless of their financial background or social status. This system ensures that knowledge is a right, not a privilege. The primary goal of free education is to create an equal society. It allows talented students from low-income families to become doctors, engineers, and leaders, helping to break the cycle of poverty. By providing free textbooks, uniforms, and university-level instruction, the government invests in the country's human capital. However, free education also comes with responsibilities. Students must value this gift and work hard to contribute back to the country. While the system faces challenges like limited resources and modernizing curricula, it remains the backbone of a literate and empowered population. In conclusion, free education is the foundation of a prosperous and just nation.

The Sinhala and Tamil New Year

Image
The Sinhala and Tamil New Year, known as "Aluth Avurudu" is the most celebrated cultural festival in Sri Lanka. It usually falls on the 13th and 14th of April, marking the end of the harvest season and the sun's transition from Meena Rashi to Mesha Rashi. The festival is unique because all rituals are performed at specific auspicious times (Nakath) calculated by astrologers. These include lighting the hearth, cooking the traditional Kiribath (milk rice), and the first meal of the year. People dress in new clothes of a specific color and exchange greetings with family and neighbors. A major highlight is the traditional food table, filled with sweets like Kavum, Kokis, and Asmi. Children and adults alike enjoy traditional games such as Kana Mutti and swinging on the Onchilla. The sound of the Koha and the blooming of Erabadu flowers signal the arrival of this joyous season. Above all, the New Year promotes unity, forgiveness, and gratitude, bringing together families a...

National Heroes of Sri Lanka

Image
Sri Lanka's journey toward independence and sovereignty was paved by the courage and sacrifices of its national heroes. These brave individuals emerged from different eras, ethnicities, and religions, united by a single goal: protecting the motherland from foreign rule and injustice. In the early colonial era, leaders like Keppetipola Pura and Gongalegoda Banda led fierce rebellions against British rule, prioritizing national pride over their own lives. As the struggle transitioned into a political movement in the 20th century, figures such as Anagarika Dharmapala worked tirelessly to revive Buddhist culture and local identity. The path to independence in 1948 was further championed by statesmen like D.S. Senanayake, known as the "Father of the Nation," along with Sir Ponnambalam Ramanathan and T.B. Jayah, who fostered communal harmony. These heroes remind us that freedom is not a gift but a hard-won right. Their legacy continues to inspire Sri Lankans to live with dign...

An Unforgettable Trip to Nuwara Eliya

Last month, I went on an unforgettable trip to Nuwara Eliya with my family. It was a refreshing break from our busy daily routines. We started our journey early in the morning by train and the scenic beauty along the way was absolutely breathtaking. When we arrived, the cool, misty weather greeted us warmly. Our first stop was the Victoria Park, which was filled with vibrant flowers of every color. We also visited a lush green tea estate and watched how tea leaves are processed. One of the highlights was the boat ride on Gregory Lake during the sunset; the view was like a beautiful painting.            We spent the night in a cozy cottage, enjoying hot chocolate and sharing stories. The laughter and joy we shared made the trip truly special. This journey was not just about visiting places, but about creating lasting memories with my loved ones. It remains the most cherished trip of my life.
